For the past few days I have been collecting brochures that have creative techniques that I want to incorporate into my brochure for my project. The first brochure that I grabbed was the 11th Annual Breast Cancer 5k Walk/Run. I liked this brochure because it had the breast cancer color pink for a themed color. I also liked that they had the silhouette pictures on the cover instead of a regular picture. I thought it was cool because it doesn’t show any specific group or person running/walking for breast cancer. This can symbolize that anyone could run/walk the 5k.

The next brochure I picked up was one about chemistry. The inside of the brochure was really cool. It had pictures of the equipment that scientists use. I also like that in this brochure has its subheadings in a different color and bolded. It makes them pop and separates them from the other works on the brochure. I like this because it keeps everything organized and easy to read and follow along. I would change the font size for the subheadings to be bigger in order to make sure that the material is easy to follow and the reader won’t get confused when the material switches subjects.

The last brochure that I picked up was one for the Women’s Resource Center. This brochure has all of the words aligned so it looks cleaned up and more professional. They also bold their headings and make the font bigger for them. I like that they changed the font for the titles that way no one can get lost. I didn’t like that their brochure isn’t colorful because it doesn’t allow the brochure to pop out. I also didn’t like that the only picture that they have is on the back. I think if I were to add a picture on my brochure it would be somewhere either in the beginning or in the middle of it. That way I would know that people saw it. Pictures also allow people to get different meanings or themes out of the topic that normally couldn’t be reached through words.

My Brochure Draft: I decided to make a brochure to display my findings from my CLUE Project because I liked the layout structure options that I could choose from. My brochure is aimed more towards teachers. In order to make my brochure more professional I cited other research and tried to make the format more formal. I grouped different information together by using subtitles. To make them stand out more I made them a bigger font size and a different color. I thought grouping information together made the brochure more organized and easier to read. I wanted to add pictures to my brochure because I thought it made it look more creative and because it took up empty space.
Poster 1: Join a BU Choir! I like that all the information I need is on the poster and that it is easy to find. I image of the music notes helps illustrate the choir and adds creativity to the poster. Another thing I like about the poster is that it groups similar things together. For example the poster has a box around the times the different choirs meet. I don't particularly like that the text in on the left doesn't consistently begin in the same place. I think that it makes the poster look a little sloppy.

Poster 2: Earn Your BU Leadership Certificate This poster shows a lot of creativity by using pictures, colors, and different fonts. Although the poster has a lot of information, it does a good job at keeping things organized and not having it look overwhelming to the reader. It also groups information together like the first poster. I also like that this poster took another step forward and changed font sizes and color in order to help the reader find his/her way quickly within the poster.

Poster 3: Legal Orientation Social I think this poster is well done like the other two. It groups the information that people can read. One thing that I like about this poster was that it had bullet pointed each important fact and aligned them to make the poster look neat and clean. I like that for a big part of the poster they used a picture of a kid getting arrested by the police. I think that picture helps grab the reader’s attention and speaks for itself. I also liked that they used a slogan to also grab the reader’s attention.

My Poster: I decided to make my poster like a help wanted sign. All of these posters told students about a particular club or activity that he/she could join. In my research I found that students get along better with their female teachers than their male teachers. The students I interviewed gave character traits and actions the teachers took in order to explain why they felt that they got along with female teachers more. Instead of saying that female teachers are better than male teachers, I decided to put all of the things that make up a good teacher, according to students, and put it in a help wanted poster as a way for employers to know what to look for in future teachers.
Political Satire: This example makes a political statement that our government is run by our corporations. The picture shows someone crossing of the word “people” in the Declaration of Independence and changes it to corporation. I like this satire because it brings out an “ugly” truth in a comical way. The purpose of this comic is to get the reader, the general public, to think about how our government is run. One of the things that I like about this comic is that the message out in plain sight. I like this because it allowed me to spend less time finding what the message is and more time thinking about how the message applies to me and effects my life.
Education satire.jpg
Education Satire: I liked this satire because it uses animals instead of people. It made me think that I could substitute people for animals in my comic and still get my overall message across. I think that using animals made this satire more creative. The message in this satire, unlike the political satire, was more subtle. I think the purpose of this satire was to show the faults in our education system. It shows that standardized tests are not a good way of showing how smart you are because they only touch on certain skills. The audience could be teachers or the people that run the education system.
Scarlet Letter Comic.jpg
Scarlet Letter Satire: I found this comic and I thought it was really funny. The comic was based on the book, The Scarlett Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The purpose of the comic was to show how ludicrous it is to put a letter on yourself based on an action you did. It made me think about the silly things that the government do. The one thing I really liked about this comic, and hope to incorporate in my satire, is that this comic took a serious topic and made it funny.
My Satire Draft: I created a brochure that talked about gender roles. Its purpose was to show the readers how silly sexist comments about gender roles really are. I think the audience for this piece isn't really directed for one particular group. Gender stereotypes apply to everyone because everyone falls under on of the two categories, male or female.
